Tow-may-tow or Toe-mah-toe?

No matter how you say it, you cannot deny that the tomato is good for your skin. Even better? You can use it topically! Yay! Although now I’m going to be torn….eat a ripe, juicy, red tomato or apply it in some form on my face….decisions.

The tomato rocks as skin care for many reasons.

Number one? The antioxidants! These are free radical ninjas, taking care of those damaging F.R.s

The application has a cooling property for irritated skin and even astringent properties. Yes, that means it does aid in reducing the appearance of pores.
Remember vitamins? Yep, those ‘pesky’ little things that are good for you. Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C (helpful for healing/preventing acne, aids in brightening dull skin) and vitamin A (needed to build healthy skin).

The natural acid helps to keep the skin’s balance and get rid of excess oil.
Now let me go ahead and put this out there before anyone can accuse me of theft. Yes, I did start this when I saw Michelle Phan’s Youtube upload. It does work for me, it should work for you. Whether it works to the same extent or not I cannot guarantee.

Two ways I like to do this.

One: Take a whole tomato and cut the top off so that you may use the stem as a handle. Dip the cut side of the handled top in to granulated sugar. Rub in small circles on freshly washed and dried face for best results. You may leave the juice and sugar on your face for five to ten minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water using circular motions.

Two: Cut up a tomato in to chunks. Place in a bowl with ¼ to ½ cup of sugar. Mash to the constentcy of chunky salsa. Apply to the face with fingertips in a circular motion, then adding additional to thin areas and let sit for 5-15 minutes. Wash off using lukewarm water and small circles, exfoliating as you go. Pat dry, use toner and moisturizer to finish the routine. Yes, there will probably be leftovers. Save in an airtight container and refrigerate afterwards. The mixture should be good up to three days after making.

You may notice a slight tint to your skin afterwards, do not fret, it will go away! Now, some quick notes:
~Organic produce is preferred over the general stuff, but either works!
~FRESH! Please, oh please, do not used canned or pureed tomatoes, tomato paste, pizza sauce, salsa, or Ragu! Just wanted to make sure we are clear, here.
~If you are allergic to tomato or sugar, please DO NOT USE this remedy!!!! I don’t know if I can stress this enough.

I love using this remedy for the spring and summer since, yes, I do sweat and tend to have more trouble in my t-zone. Make sure to use toner and moisturizer afterwards! Also, do not use this method everyday, as the skin will become either a) accustomed to it and therefore immune, or b) may become too sensitive and instead of clearing it may aggravate.
